Medicine: Suspended Animation

Once your heart stops, you normally have about 5 minutes before permanent irreversible damage happens in the brain. Beyond this, only 5% of all patients that come into the hospital with their heart stopped and having lost half their blood survive. Suspended animation will allow about 2 hours to repair all the damage that once had to be repaired in about 5 minutes.

Design: Tiny Hands by Donald Trump

A few years ago, designer Mark Davis was commissioned to build a font based on Donald Trump’s marker writings. I have absolutely no love at all for Donnie, but I absolutely love his handmarkerwriting. It is as expressive as any graffiti artist scrawling their name across a wall.

Featuring several Trumpian variants for different letters, the font is now available for free here.

Home Hack: Super Slippery Toilet Spray

A new nanotechnology promises to keep our toilets clean. If you are anything like me, your toilet is the last thing you want to clean and the first thing that should be cleaned. SpotLess introduces a coating that lets poop just slide slide slippity slide off the sides of the bowl and down into the drain without sicking and requiring constant scrubbing that you probably won’t be doing.

AI: How To Begin A Novel

Last year for National Novel Writing Month I trained a neural net called torch-rnn on 10,096 unique ways to begin a novel. It came up with some intriguing possibilities, my personal favorite being “I am forced to write to my neighbors about the beast.” But many of its sentences used made-up words, or had such weird grammar that they were difficult to read, or meandered too erratically. (“The first day of the world was born in the year 1985, in an old side of the world, and the air of the old sky of lemon and waves and berries.”) The neural net was struggling to write more than a few words at a time.

AI: How to Recognize AI Snake Oil

AI is an umbrella term for a set of loosely related technologies. Some of those technologies have made genuine, remarkable, and widely-publicized progress recently. But companies exploit public confusion by slapping the “AI” label on whatever they’re selling…
